Toning an Image

One of the great advantages in using a program such as Photoshop is that we can change an image in minutes. That same process in the darkroom could have taken hours. This shot was taken at the Usk festival with the Coolpix 950 and lends itself to being sepia toned which will help give it a sense of age.

The Hue/Saturation palette is found under the Image>Adjust menu. Once opened our first task is to 'tick' the Colorize as shown above. At first this may turn our image some strange colour, but using the Hue slider you can adjust the tone by moving it to around 25. The Saturation slider can also be adjusted and 27 was select for this image.

Try experimenting further with the Hue slider. In the below image the Hue was increased to around 30 and the Saturation to 27. This has given us a richer tone which may look better on some images.

You can also give an image a really cool feel to it by setting the Hue to 200 which will give your image a blue tone. You'll find loads of different tones simply by adjusting the Hue slider and don't forget to adjust the Saturation to tweak it that little bit more.
