Black, Grey and White Point Level Adjustments: In your levels adjustments box, locate the following icons:
These are the "Set Black Point", "Set Grey Point", and "Set White Point" tools. Instead of using the auto adjust command, these tools can be useful in some instances. To use these tools, first select the"Set Black Point", and then select the darkest point of your image (or the point that you want to be the darkest). Whichever color you select with this tool, will become the darkest point of your image. All colors darker than it will become as dark as it (meaning that if you selected the white snow, most of the snow would turn completely black! Be Careful!). I am going to select the black glove for my black point:
There is a subtle change, but nothing serious. The point I selected has now become the absolute Black. Now choose the "Set Grey Point". Choose the point on your document that you want to be the mid tone value of your photograph.
Finally, set your photographs White Point. This should be the point you want to be White! I am going to select the brightest patch of snow I can find:
See the improvements in our document and its tonal range? This is a crucial tool for any photographer looking for correctly exposed photographs! If your white point seems to white, or black point seems to dark, you can always change the output levels (located below the levels histogram).
And that's all there is to it! A simple and fast way to easily adjust your photos levels. There is one more easy way to do this by using the sliders which will be discussed in the next section of this tutorial.
