Symbian Expo Preview: Series 60 Platform
Richard Bloor   Tuesday, 21 September 2004
Series 60 is very much the leading light in the smartphone market, with the greatest number of handsets from the broadest community of handset vendors. They will not be hard to miss at the show. But should you have any difficulty finding them the solution is simple – they will be in booth 60!

The key themes for Series 60 at the Expo are 3G and Enterprise. “Series 60 provides a true smartphone platform for 3G networks and applications solutions,” says Mikko Rntynen, Senior Product Marketing Manager for the Series 60 Platform. “With the role out of 3G networks in Europe, Asia and America this is a key focus for Series 60 devices. For enterprise we will be showing that Series 60 has both the built in applications needed by enterprise user and that it is also an excellent platform for enterprise vendors and third party developers to build their solutions on.” Mikko will be highlighting capabilities such as push email and VPN connectivity as key Series 60 enterprise enablers at the show.

The Series 60 Platform booth will bring together a comprehensive range of smartphones from a broad range of vendors in the Terminal Showcase, complemented by demonstrations of the latest smartphones from Nokia, Siemens and Sendo.

Presentations from Series 60 will be taking place in the Symbian Developer Seminar track, with a focus on Series 60 and User Interface. These will include Mikko providing a introduction to the Series 60 evolution looking at what the platform is now and the new features being added to Series 60 in the forthcoming Feature Packs.

The Series 60 booth will be complimented by the Forum Nokia booth where developers will be able to find out more about application development, documentation and development tools.

In addition Forum Nokia will also be providing a number of Series 60 orientated presentations including an introduction to the Series 60 Developer Platform, the common architecture and technology base provided for developers, an overview of the Series 60 market and a technical presentation on how to create Series 60 Developer Platform applications.

While there will be a range of developer partners on the Forum Nokia booth Series 60 have selected Swedish company Synergenix Interactive to demonstrate its multiplayer Rally game. Synergenix Interactive was selected because of its reputation as a developer of exciting, quality multiplayer games. The Rally game has been developed specifically for the various Series 60 devices available from different terminal manufacturers, so it is seen as a great match for the Series 60 stand, helping to illustrate the range of application which the Series 60 Platform can host.

“We hope that visitors to the show will gain an understanding of the number of Series 60 handset on the market and the volumes in which they are shipping,” says Mikko, “And that this coupled with the Platforms technical capabilities and the platform approach means that Series 60 is the leading enabler for smartphone products and services, on the leading edge for enterprise and 3G solutions.”
